Bum Crack Sniffer

I use a sigma EF-530 portable flash on my pentax K10d. When I take pictures of people there is often shadows of their ears and heads on the wall behind them. How can I avoid this.
I cant always point the flash up and bounce off the ceiling because often the ceiling is too high. So I direct the flash straight on the subjects. But why always the big shadows on the wall behind their ears? It makes it look like they have an extra hair piece or something...
Today I used (inside) an aperture of F.6.3 with a shutter speed of 125 and an ISO of 400 and the portable flash...
