hi my son had a diving injury 2 years ago and he developed 3 spinal bulges ,one of them in his neck.. he had to have a soecial chair a year ago in school but now hes in secondary school this will be impossible..weve just been to his first physio appt on friday he saw a fab nurse who seems to think hes got something more than just the bulges..hes now got several other symptoms like cant walk far he walks on his toes due to tight tendons.cant eat due to stomach upset by the dailt painkillers cant sleep as he cant get comfy.he cant get in the bath as he cant bend his legs enough..hes gone from a very active child to very inactive hes tired most of the time..were just trying to figure out whats going on with him

:(

Sorry to read about your son's symptoms. I would suggest that you go through the channels and have him see a specialist, such as a neurologist for starters. They would have a much better idea after some very important nerve tests, as well and some imagery scans.

just how old is your son? did they do an actual MRI on his full spinal or only like an x ray when it happened? has he EVER actually had a full spinal MRI done at all since then? if not, he most definitely needs one just to really determine full extent of level of injury to what could also involve the spinal cord as well? how old was he when this occured? was he seen by at the very least a good neurosurgeon then? he does need a follow up MRI done NOW even if he had one at the beginning of this incident since spinal issues, esp in a growing child can change, in some cases alot over time. even within a year.

his symptoms really sound as tho his actual spinal cord could be involved or compromised in some way here. how are his actual leg reflexes like? have him just sit down in a chair then if you take the handle end of a butter knife and simply tap the area directly under his knee caps(just tap rather gently, but enough to get any type of real bounce effect?) on both legs, see if they just bounce out slightly(normal) or if they are very 'brisk' in nature(hyper reflexic), or non existant? he just sounds like he has very spastic type legs going on which is a indication of possible cord issues(i have this too in one leg). knowing exactly how the legs respond to that one type of test is really rather crucial.
if you could just answer the questions i asked it would really help me alot to better help you with this. FB

hi hes 12 he had the injury 2 years ago..hes had mri twice in that time but it has been a year since his last one..his reflexes are ok...but ive spoken tohis doc earlier and shes arranging another full mri to see whats going on.i told his school earlier that he cannot do any kind of pe..they werent happy i will tell you!his doc thinks hes got spinal stenosis? will look on health board later but theyre upping painkillers and given him gaviscon and tummy reliever too..

just considering his condition and the overall mechanism of his injury, it could have started stenosis at certain areas where the vertebraes and discs were much more impacted. did he say exactly WHERE he suspects the stenosis? it can be in many different places including within the actual spinal canal too? you do need to find that out.

just about anythijng can happen when you suffer THAT particular type of injury. getting that updated MRI really IS a good thing here too. make certain they do this WITH some form of actual contrasting agent too? it just better highlights certain types of actual findings in the spinal than without using it would? you just want to actually see as much as possible right now. have you been obtaining all of his ongoing testing results along with all of his ongoing medical records too? if not, please do start doing this now and get every piece of paper that has been generated from this particular injury from every hospital and doc, PT person or ANYONE who has 'done' anything to him or treated him in any way shape or form now. this is just a very critical event that occured with your son that will follow him in an ongoing way, probably for the rest of his life in some shape or form? getting ALL of his medical records now will just seriously help in keeping the very BEST possible medical history you can have for him later and for you to simply help you with things now too?

believe me, he will be grateful and so will ANY doc that may possibly treat him again in his future just having ALL of the very important initial injury info/records and everything that gets generated on him from here on out too(some of this stuff he just will not be able to actually obtain later on like even ten years from now). i had to start doing this for my youngest son when he was only 12 when he went into a very 'suprise to us' form of liver failure then needed a transplant? i have every single document that has been generated on him from the very day he first presented with symptoms to the present with any test results, all his crucial lab work, and any actual records from other hospital stays as well? and of course any MRIs or other radiologic type studies as well.

not only is this the very best thing you can just do for your son, but just getting your own copies of all MRIs lets YOU know too just exactly what is in any real testing results too. sometimes docs just do NOT actually even tell patients everything that was actually found in certain MRIs or CTs or any types of real testing. this has happened to me personally too and i was thankful that I started doing this record keeping stuff for me when all my major medical nightmares started happening to me too. all this takes is simply calling anyplace that he has been seen at and asking them for their medical records dept? they will send you out a 'release of informatiuon' form to just fill out and send back? right now, i would date everything from the very day of his injury up to the present? just to obtain all the initial records, then like every six months or once a year just ask for records again from anyplace he has been seen.

then keep all of like his MRIs he has had done or any really pertinent types of info in some type of expanding folder that you simply can take with you to any appt he has or god forbid if he needs to go to any hospital for emergency care for this, that folder will also go with you too? and ANY of his initial injury records i would definitely keep in that folder always, since this IS the beginning of this and also includes info on what things looked like initially vs now kind of thing? very important 'baseline' stuff the docs he would be seeing like now can use to simply compare how things have progressed in him? this IS very important to be able to compare newer findings to.

once you obtain ALL of the past years stuff it does become much easier from there really. just phone calls and fill out a new form every year since that release is good for one year. its pretty simple to do and like i said, your son may not even be able to find or obtain alot of this more crucial stuff on HIS medical history later? the one thing tho that i would always obtain as soon as the doc has it is ANY testing like MRIs and CTs or any types of real testing reports. those you CAN simply ask his doc who ordered that test for a copy to be made right in his office so you have it in your folder when you leave? this stuff i always get right away just so I can read thru my own reports? this is just sooo simple to just do for your son and will be needed and he will want to be able to read thru his own medical history too at some point. it will be the best thing you can do for him medically for HIS future to just start doing this now and keep going with it.

i just wanted to make certain i told you that. it really really has been majorly helpful for my sons ongoing condition(his transplant will be ten years old come june)and i still do this for him and for my crap too. just make certain that after this particular MRI gets done that you actually ask his doc for a copy for your sons at home medical files. you DO have a right to his and your own medical records too. once he gets that MRI done and you obtain that copy, if you could just type out here what is in the very end of that report in whats called the "summary" at the very end on here for me to read it really would give me a much clearer idea of just what he is really dealing with. i CAN help you to better understand certain findings in it that docs do not always tell you everything about? i am just really curious as to his true level of injury here given his ongoing symptoms.

hopefully things have not progressed to much since the last one. but you really DO need to obtain the reacords and make certain to ask for every single MRI report and all the medical records from that hospital stay from the initial injury too. also any docs or PTs clinic records too. just call every docs office where he has been seen and ask for them. they will know what to do from there. this really IS the very best thing to be doing, and for many many good reasons. please let me know what you find out. good luck, FB
