I work for a corporation that produces booklets containing art, some reproductions of fine art and photos. I have very little leaway and must go along with the processes the company uses - I'm not freelance so don't have the luxury of trying a lot of techniques. I also am not dealing with our printers. I get a .jpg file of an image, make it look the best I can, change from color to grayscale if necessary (we print in B&W) then drop it into a word file. The word file is then joined with other word files to create the document and I *believe* they create a PDF and send this to the printer. There have been complaints that some images are too dark or muddy - which they are not when we process them in Photoshop. I think there's something in the PDF process that's doing this but that part of the process is out of my hands, as is dealing with the printers. Any comments from you graphics wizards out there?
