I bought a Yamaha XS250c a couple of months ago. It has 23,350 miles on the clock (verified by a vehicle report). When I first got it it was having troubles starting, so my mechanic replaced the condenser and battery. Since then it has started no troubles.
It runs well, there is no rattling of the engine or black smoke. Occasionally it misfires (VERY occasionally). It does however leak oil (a spot the size of a £2 coin every night).
The mechanic wanted to see the bike again after a month to test the compression. It was very low (about 40 if I remember correctly). He seems to think that the bike is on its last legs and doesn't think it is worth trying to fix - he predicted it had another 4,000 miles in it.
Is there anything I can do to improve the compression? Or anything I can suggest he does? I really love this bike. I spent £475 buying it and have spent £90 on it so far. I would be willing to spend another £100 getting it into good shape, but the mechanic seems to think that the end of the bike is inevitable (he hasn't tested the bike to see why it is poorly compressed).
I've heard that Redex is good for flushing out the system - might this help? Or am I flogging a dead horse?
