I drive a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT and today, as I started driving to class, I got an alert on the DIC info screen/box saying "Check Gas Cap." Confused (since this is Thursday morning and I filled my car up this past Monday early in the evening), I pulled over to park and check the gas cap (this isn't the first time I've gotten the alert, but the last time I did was like a year ago and it wouldn't shut off until I had removed and clicked the gas cap back on at least 10 times), which seemed to be on fine so I put it back on with a few clicks, but the alert still didn't go away. Already annoyed, I decided to just ignore until reaching my campus (which is about 21 or so miles away from my house).
I then check the cap again only this time it feels busted as I try to put it back on (it wouldn't click on more than once) and figured "great, I'll have to try and find a gas cap to replace." I decide to head to the nearest AutoZone, I give them my car model and they give me a gas cap for a little under $12, which goes on very nice and firmly, yet the alert still comes up. I've looked in the owner's manual and it doesn't offer any advice on how to get rid of it other than "putting the cap back on."
Anyone got any advice?
