Pontiac Grand am smells like antifreeze? Please help!?

My 1999 Pontiac Grand am is just starting to give me trouble. Whenever I am idling in hot weather, the temp gauge goes up... however in the same temps when I start off down the highway and turn my heat on, it cools down. Also, it smells like antifreeze. I checked the coolant level, and noticed the coolant was really dirty, almost looked like there was oil in it.

Could this be caused by a water pump issue? Trying to figure this out so I don't get robbed by a repair shop. I just lost my job and need this car to interview.
Also want to add that the Check Engine light is NOT on at this time. And the heat and the AC are working. The antifreeze appeared to be still at a good level, however it appeared to have oil in it like I said. :( :(
Can I just keep adding coolant to it and keep an eye on the levels to get me by until I can get this permanently repaired?
Hello --- it is a v6 engine. I haven't heard a fan come on but I will listen for it. I noticed that the weather effects it a LOT. On a cool day like today there is NO problems, it sits right at 200 approx and doesn't move. But it warms up to 70s-80s like last week, it will get up to 210+ really quick.
