pontiac fuel pump heat spacer?

k i feel real dumb for asking this but.... on all the engine builds i do are for performance and i haven't used a mechanical fuel pump on any in years,soooo im building a nice 1980 trans am with a 72 455 and am going to go with a mechanical pump instead of a loud racing pump....now the instructions say to put the heat spacer between the pump and block mounting area or it'll tear up the pump.... but i swear i don't ever remember their being one on the pontiac v8....and yes its a pontiac pump
