Pontiac 2.4 DOHC Timing Issues?

What position should the cams be when setting the crank at TDC?
I know that the cams are supposed to be with the dowel pins under sprocket at 12:00 and able to slid the 8 mm bolt in at 6:00 and if you have to turn them more than 1/8th turn, you have to set the crank at 90 degrees past TDC, but what location should the cams be while finding TDC on the crank? No where in the Haynes manual or internet manual does it specify. It does specify that after you turn the crank 90 degrees past TDC to time the cams that you have to turn the crank back 90 degrees to time in a counter clockwise direction to avoid lifter and rod damage. But it also says to rotate the crank clockwise to find TDC. Again, I need to know what position the cams are supposed to be before I turn the crank clockwise to TDC???? Help, wife gonna kill me if I don't get this done today. Thanks to all that can answer.
