I was convicted of a felony 5 years ago. It follows me to this day. I was, for a little while a single mom with 2 kids after I served my 4 months and 2 years probation, I had to take whatever jobs I could get, delivering pizza, courier...then I got a job at a call center through a temp agency, for 1-800-MEDICARE!!! Felony not-withstanding, I was allowed to play with peoples social security numbers and such, well this was a temporary position, even though after 4 months I was allowed to be hired directly to the company. My felony popped up as an issue for about 5 min then it got cleared through our Federal Government. Ok so the 1-800-MEDICARE project is now over, the next project through the company i was hired on at is with Verizon, billing, customer service, collections.....I was released with my background check, which was exactly as i had said was on it. I can't activate cell phones becasue it deals with peoples credit card information and social security numbers. HELLO!!! I jsut had access to a Government computer system with social security numbers, DOB, and address information. I could have done some damage there, but I didn't. So what makes Verizon different? Ummm..yes I did get convicted of a felony 5 years ago. got off probation 3 years ago, with no blemishes on my record since, now a mom to 2 small boys, and a husband, yet I have issues getting a job because of something that happened almost 6 years ago. So now that I have been released from the company I loved, I am once again on the job market debating on taking a job below my education level and training because I can't pass a background check. Yet I was allowed to work on a Government project? Does this make sense to anyone??

What did you do?

It makes some sense. You seem clean to me but who knows people lie. just because the government fucked up doesnt mean I have to aswell. I'm just saying look at their perspective.

i was done for DUI in december 2004. i've got my licence back after a 9-month period.

my volvo was beyond repair, the steering column snapped whilst i was driving shitfaced and i virtually handed myself to the cops on a silver platter. they weren't nice enough to give my deadbeat ass a ride hime so i had to walk a good 10kms with a fucked up ankle from the collision.

well, if you robbed someone through their credit card, i can understand. if it was like dui or something, that's complete bullshit. fuck that noise. :mfinger:

I would imagine the main difference is that a government agency can do their own background check and investigation, whereas a public company relies on what is submitted on the job application, and very seldom makes any exceptions to a company policy.

I used to do hiring for a large corporation and the rule was "no police record", period. No questions, no leniency for an individual. If someone lied on their application (regarding their record or any other background information) and it was found out later, the person was fired on the spot. I'm not saying this was/is right, but it's the rules at that company.

And of course, we know, seeing all of the indictments for theft, fraud and money-mismanagement by corporate officers, how deceit is viewed at the higher levels of any company.

it was embezzlement and credit card fraud, which i didnt do, but i couldnt prove that i didnt do it. from a pizza place none the less. well luckily i found a job at a school recently who said whatever and took me on anyways. it is a great job with great pay and benes, all family owned and reorganizing so there is room to grow within the company.
