Polyps caused by acid reflux?

Hey everyone. I had an upper GI endoscopy done back in April and today I finally found out the results. I had severe nausea and abdominal pain for for over 2 months before the endoscopy. During the endoscopy my doctor found a small amount of inflammation in the pit of my stomach and a polyp in my distal esophagus. They did a biopsy on both and he came to the conclusion that my problems are being caused by a worsening of my acid reflux disease. I have been diagnosed with acid reflux disease for several years now but it has never caused problems anywhere near the severity of the problems that I have had this year. Anyway, can anyone give me more information on these polyps that are caused by acid reflux disease?

Also, is it really possible for acid reflux disease to cause excruciating nausea pains? I mean, there for a couple of days my nausea was so bad that I would double over in pain at times. So anyway, thanks for the information you can provide!

So sorry to hear about your discomfort. In my case, I usually get nauseous a few days before I get hit with a heartburn flareup or "attack." Nausea is a signal to me that that acid must be splashing back onto the esophagus and causing irritation. After a few days of that, then I experience heartburn. Nausea is, therefore, a signal to me that I need to alter something in my diet to slow down or reverse the irritation if I can. I also use DGL to soothe my esophagus.

Acid reflux can indeed cause nausea and pain.

Polyps in your stomach can be caused by many factors including the long term use of PPI's to treat the excess acid.

Hey there! I have a question for you. What does DGL stand for? Also, the polyp that I had was not in my stomach. It was in my distal esophagus. It was apparently caused by the splashing of stomach acid into my esophagus. I have also been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia several years ago. Could that be related to my acid reflux and such? Also, can drinking too much soda (I drink Diet Mountain Dew quite frequently) cause acid reflux? I notice sometimes that if I drink a soda too fast, the contents of my stomach will come back up in to my throat and sometimes come all the way up to my mouth. This sometimes even causes me to throw up a bit. Perhaps I should cut down on the amount of soda that I drink?

Sodas don't cause reflux but they can irritate your esophagus. In Mountain Dew's case, you have the double whammy of carbonation and caffeine. Mountain Dew has a lot of caffeine. I used to be an avid consumer of coffee and Diet Coke and had to quit both completely. Both now cause heartburn.

DGL is a healthfood supplement made of Licorice extract. It is a special form that does not cause an increase in blood pressure like regular licorice can. It is very soothing to the stomach. You chew two tablets before meals and let it seep down your throat. I have found it very soothing and helped me control heartburn symptoms. It is supposed to help create the good type of mucus that protects the esophagus from stomach acid. If you google DGL, you can find out more about it, what it is, where to purchase it, etc.
