Poll: listening to music/headphones during street riding

Guilty as charged.

I do ride w/ headphones on, but mainly on long trips. When in the group, I used to ride w/ them on, but that became annoying pretty damn fast since I couldn't really hear what people were saying while at the red light / stop sign (it's even more annoying trying to get to your iPod to turn it down).

On the other hand, I do have these installed in my helmet and I do have to say they really are awesome. You can't see/feel them in the helmet and they're not extremely loud (I have my iPod on max and can still hear the engine and traffic around me).

Regarding legal/illegal issue, as far as I know, it's only illegal if you have them IN your ear (like the OEM iPod ear buds). Since IMC are not true headphone, they are legal and so are the communication devices some of you speak of.

Depends on the day really. Like a lot of people have said, long highway rides, absolutely. If I don't put them in for long rides (whether the music is on OR off) my ears will be ringing by the time I get where I'm going.

Twisty days, usually not. I like to hear my environment. HOWEVER, rocking out to some Offspring while I'm getting my carve on is probably the most fun I have on the bike.... I keep the volume down so I can still hear most of my environment.

To each his own, so long as it doesn't put OTHERS at risk.

I ride with music pretty frequently. I put in one ear bud that way I can hear it but don't situational awareness of what's going on around me. Never had a problem riding street or track.

In California listening to music in your helmet is legal. It comes down to definitions:

Speakers stay in the helmet when removed -LEGAL

Earphones that stay in your ears when the helmet is removed-ILLEGAL UNLESS CUSTOM FIT MY MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL.

That said, I have an autocom setup in my street helmet for talking to the wifey, but don't use it alone or on the track. Personal preference.
