Poll: listening to music/headphones during street riding

Just wondering how many of you have your ipod or whatever music device on when your street riding. I know some are very opinionated either way, but curious as to the split.

Thanks!
Nick

I used to have an Autocomm set-up on my 900SS, but havnt fitted it to my 1198 and dont think I ever will, the sound of the bike is better than most music around these days anyhow if you ask me... especially when up around the 8k mark.

Ok, I'll be the first.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I think music while riding is a joke. For me it's counter to everything I believe riding is supposed to be...an escape. As technological as our lives are, I prefer to get away from my cellphone, my laptop, my tv, my iPod; all the techno bs that I don't need and especially don't want on my ride.

You know what sounds sweet to me? You know what gets my juices flowing while I'm riding? You know what keeps me entertained? The bark of my 1198 and the rush of the wind through my helmet. I'll save the 'inspirational metal' for the gym thanks.

You weren't the first, but I agree with you completely. I've tried it along time ago and enjoy my rides without music much much more, even the boring freeway rides. I like to listen to the bike when I'm riding, especially when I'm riding hard. I also like to be as aware as possible as to what's going on around me when riding, for obvious reasons.

It also gives you time to think about things and reflect a little, something most people have a hard time finding time for these busy days.

+1.

The delights of riding a bike, especially a Ducati, are manifold: sensual, visual, tactile, aural.....safety issues aside (and these can't be ignored) i simply don't get why you'd want some soundtrack to distract you from all of this?

PS - and whilst on this topic, what's with this i-Generation and their obsession with having "theme-music" to accompany every venture they do....??!!

Listening to music in your helmet is illegal and extremely dangerous. If you think listening to music while riding a sport bike helps you relax or is fun or cool or intense or whatever, you're missing the point, you're a menace to motorcycling, and you have no business on a motorcycle.

I also have a Bluetooth setup got my helmet. I used to listen when I ride.

Last summer the car in front of me slammed into the car that pulled out in front of it from a blind alley and went 40-0 in nothing flat. Even though I was following at a safe distance and had plenty of room to stop, I couldn't hear what was going on behind me because of the music (and wasn't turned up that loud). So I lightened up on the brakes, looked behind, saw that the truck behind me also had plenty of room (thankfully driven be a fellow rider) and returned my attention to the task at hand. By then, the car in front was much closer than I thought it would be. I grabbed a handful of brake and stopped millimeters off the bumper with my rear tire in the air. I lost my footing when I came back down and dropped the bike. Other than my ego I was unhurt; the bike had amazingly little damage. Not a spot on the fairings, but a bent brake lever and clipon set me back several hundred dollars.

All that said, while I can't say that absolutely the music being on made any difference, or that it would have happened any differently with in-helmet silence, its been off ever since. Just in case.

(As a side note, I enjoy the ride even more now and feel a little more in tune [pun intended] with the bike and the road.)

I think that's the main reason that I don't need extra music.
The best music comes from the engine, right?

Oh, yea, and Elton would tell on us.
