Moonlight Rain
I awake
to the sound of rain
tapping at the sides of the tent
as fierce as a beating drum.
Restless I unzip the cloth door,
and wander
out into the moonlight
I dance down to the river
the earth gushing between my toes,
mud eating at my heals
and water beginning to penetrate through my many layers.
I find my rocky perch above the river.
All is silent, but the sound
of the harsh rain smashing
on the thirsty skin of the earth.
Crawling across the branches of the trees
it makes woods glisten under the moonlight
like a freshly waxed car.
The pouring rain comes to a slow halt,
The clouds begin tumble away
leaving only a mist in their trail.
The sun creeps up from behind the trees
as I slip back
into the tent.
