I bought a book at the good will for one dollar called The Book of American Negr0 Poetry (edited by James Weldon Johnson) I really like some of the poems in it. I've never read any poetry before, but my favorites in the book include As I Grew Older by Langston Hughes, Hatred by Gwendolyn Bennett, and Immortality by Frank Horne.
Now I want to read more poetry, but I don't know where to start. I don't want to read anything cheesy about flowers and kittens and Jesus's love. I want to read powerful ones, about youth from an adults perspective and overcoming obstacles and stuff. I've liked the shorter poems better than the longer ones.
What should I read? And please don't suggest anything too obvious
