Hello

My nan with slight dementia and slight incontinance and has gone into hospital with pneumonia. They were treating her but have now stopped this and are not feeding her, nil by mouth. Does anybody know anything about this illness. Thanks

Why have they stopped treatment, and what treatment was it? Were they giving her IV? This constitutes nutritional supliments as it does provide fluids etc. How bad is your grandmother's dementia? How long has your grandmother been in the hospital?[/

Pneumonia is fluid in the lungs. It is usually treated with antibiotics and breathing treatments to make sure that they get the fluid out of the lungs.

Hello

I'm not sure what treatment they were giving here, but my dad said there was no hope. My Dad said my Nan slept for about 4 - 5 hours and when she woke up she could not speak, so an ambulance was called. When she got there they said she had pneumonia the next day which was Thursday this week. Friday morning they said they were stopping treatment. Saturday I went to see her and it was nil by mouth above her bed. She opened her eyes and smiled to us. After that she didn't open her eyes all day and didn't really move. Also when my Dad touched her cheek she didn't even flinch. So whether she was in a coma sort of thing I don;t know. I know the hospital were giving her morphine and something to stop her being sick along with something else. They also made up a mouth wash or something and when they went to give it to my Nan she held her lips tight.

I am so sorry to hear about your nan--it sounds like she may be too sick to be treated and the hospital is only giving comfort measures.

I will keep your nan and your family in my prayers.
