Pls help - cyst on back and VERY painful :(

Nothing like a smart mouthed doctor. You know what's amazing? Mine was horrible. My Mom had open heart and was recovering at my home just days out of the hospital which is why I kept putting it off. By the time I got there it was huge...maybe that's why they lanced with no attempt at antibiotics. So he lanced it with a surgical knife. It was a slice about 3 inches long to get into the heart of the cyst and, once it was healed, I had zero scar. If it wasn't for that odd pudding type piece of skin you'd have no idea it ever happened. Of course I kept it very clean and covered for 10 days. But I almost wonder if stitching might create more damage than it helps if the cyst is caught just right. I understand it is sort of an art to go just deep enough to drain it all but not too deep. Considering the doctor, maybe he had no choice but to stitch! Still, I'm glad you went. If the antibiotics help, the pain should be much better tomorrow.

I think either they were afraid of leaving a scar (not knowing 100% they would be doing it right for a picky person like me) or because mine wasn't ready. One doctor (2 looked at me) said it wasn't ready to be cut?? Maybe because it was so hard or ? I have no idea. It was only 2 days for this to develop so it's not like it was there for years.

Yes you were very fortunate and if it was that big and had come to a head then that's prob. why they did it and to also give you relief. I will keep you posted to let you know how it goes. I'm praying it just goes down on its own.

I have read numerous websites, journals, etc. and it really all depends when you catch it, how you treat it, etc. Certain people interact with antibiotics better than others so sometimes that can get it and other times there is no choice but to drain or cut. They say there's a 50/50 shot of it coming back if it's not fully cut out. If mine drains, then I'm not getting it cut out unless it keeps on coming back.

Yes that dermatologist was a total sham and just looking for business. By not stitching it tight enough - that means another appt. and another billing to my insurance company for something he would've made up as if I had more serious problems or whatever. When I checked his background - he had moved ALL over the place.... so.... I'm thinking it's because he's a shady character and doing botch jobs so he has to keep moving. There won't be a next time for me before I ever let someone else cut on me. I will def. be doing my own research first and google the doctor to see if I can find any reviews. When I'm done with this mess I'll be putting a review out on him to warn others. What he promised vs. what he delivered - no where near.

Glad yours is ok though :)

I think I understand better now. You actually wanted the cyst removed, I just wanted it drained. The antibiotics make sense now.

When I went in they told me that if I wanted the "core" removed (the actual cyst) I would have to wait until it was completely healed (it had to be lanced at that time, no choice) and free of infection. Then I could go get it removed but that they could not do anything with that core until it was empty and healed. My primary care said to wait and see what happened before I had it removed, that it might never bother me again and it hasn't. So I understand now that we had different goals in terms of treatment.

It's been years since mine happened so I'm glad I listened to my primary but if you've already have others you might need a more aggressive solution. This was the only one I've ever had.

Nooooooo I don't want it removed if I don't have to. Do you know that I have been to urgent care twice and they have yet to lance it and gave me a surgeon's card???? I won't be using it esp. after they referred me to the derma. that screwed me up to begin with. Now they say I may have MRSA and that could be causing the cysts. I'm like UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Does anyone know anything??? Now I'm debating on going elsewhere to get someone else to look at it.

The Levaquin was horrible for me. Didn't get to sleep until 6am and even then it was horrible. I soaked in the tub for 30 min. but to no avail. I really don't think this thing is coming open until it's lanced. All I know is that it is sooooooooooo painful. The Levaquin gave me leg pains all night so I told her there was no way I was taking it anymore as it is known for tendonitis.

I'm about ready to call my Dad's best friend that's a physician in PA. Lord forbid.

Say a prayer for me please. :)

UPDATE: Wow - I call an emergency dermatologist referred by a friend and he tells me that she (dr at urgent care) should have never given me any antibiotics that the cyst was just ruptured not per se infected and just needs to be drained. Too many dr's are quick to prescribe antibiotics when it's really not needed, which is not good because you can become immune to them so when you really need them to work - might not.

So he told me to continue w/ the hot compresses/baths, etc. and hopefully it will begin to drain at some point to give me some relief. He said don't take pain killers if you don't have to and also get it lanced tomorrow if I can find someone open. He said chances are I may not get all of the stuff out, but if I would then I may be ok.

SOoooooooooooooooo glad I trusted myself and thank goodness for everyone on the internet (including yourself) that posts out here and elsewhere. I read somewhere that I shouldn't be taking antibiotics for the cyst and sure enough - they were right. Not the urgent care dr. GO FIGURE!

Have a great day :)
