Dear Mr. and Mrs. Fithian,
This is Yoon Mi Lee, mother of Rebecca Y. Tanaka-Lee, John Wong, and Paul Wong. I am writing in response to the letter you sent us on Friday, October 29. I would also like to clear up any misunderstandings we may have had, and explain a few things to you regarding our involvement in this household.
My family did not come here with intentions to be tenants in a house that was not up for rent, in a state of disrepair and disorder, and already inhabited by an elderly man. We came here because Clyde Wong flew to Honolulu and decided that we needed help (to quote: “You need a cushion to lean on, come.”) without any say from us, and took Paul back with him to Hilo. Our original intention for coming to the Big Island was to collect Paul. After some thought, we decided to take up the offer Clyde made, taking his word, and until Pat became angry with this situation, there were little to no issues between us and the Wong family. Granted, due to Clyde entering multiple sweepstakes under the deluded idea that he would win millions of dollars while ending up losing approximately $50,000, there were times when he and Pat would take out that loss on us; but there were no issues that would have caused us to consider moving out as a definite option. However, Mrs. Ellen Wong and Mrs. Fithian not only added to the amount of abuse and harassment that took place in this household, but Mrs. Ellen also violated quite a few laws. Harassing my family, threatening us, yelling at my children and swearing at and in front of them, while also invading our privacy, she not only managed (along with Mrs. Fithian) to push my entire family away from the Wongs, she also succeeded in cutting off the last chance for the Wong family to interact with the last descendants of the Wongs, John and Paul. Then, on Friday, October 29, Mrs. Fithian damaged the front door in entering the household while I was sleeping. She entered with five men, and stripped the house of not only the Wongs’ property, but also some of ours (e.g. our toaster, drink tray, tupperware, etc.). She also left a letter requesting that we pay an electricity bill issued by Hawaiian Electric Light Co., Inc. To clear up this matter, I’d like to explain that Mrs. Fithian and I are not in a landlord-tenant relationship, and that we have no written or verbal agreement that I needed to pay anything. In fact, she was not involved in our coming to Hilo. However, to make it clear for her, we are under no obligation to pay this bill. The phrase she put on the letter (to quote: “You use it, you pay for it.”) does not apply to a situation in which I was not told that I must pay to use the electricity and am in fact under no contract with Mrs. Fithian. Not to mention, I gave Clyde approximately $250 a month from September 2009 to April 2010 for the electricity bill, while also paying for the drying machine’s repair fees twice. I do believe that she has intent to take this to court if I do not pay the bill, due to the nature of the letter she sent – and I may indeed be mistaken, but this is what I gathered from the mannerism of the letter – so I feel it only fair to say, that if she does decide to take us to court, we will follow through. I am also led to think that she has contact with Craig Wong, my sons’ father (birthday cards signed by Craig and sent to my children – which I refused to accept – are the evidence for this) and would like to also add that my children have a lifetime restraining order against Craig, and the passing on of those birthday cards from him to my children was illegal. I will not hesitate to notify the police if I find reason to feel that my children’s safety is threatened, and I will have no trouble in notifying the police if I find reason to feel that my family and I are being harassed, endangered, or exploited by your family. Again, we came as family members, and not as tenants. I do not see reason to be ordered around, harassed, sworn at, shouted at, or to have my privacy invaded. I also do not see reason to be discriminated against as a Korean, nor as a single mother who has been abused by Mrs. Fithian and Mr. Fithian’s great-nephew/Ellen and Clyde Wong’s son, Craig.
In short, I would like you to simply leave me and my family alone, to resolve the misunderstandings that took place, and to not hold my family responsible for the bill sent by Mrs. Fithian and Hawaii Electric Light Co., Inc. I hope I have not inconvenienced you in any way, and that my family will be understood to be separate from yours. Keeping that in mind, I bid you Wongs and Fithians good day.
Sincerely,
Yoon Mi Lee
