I'm sure this has been posted many times so please forgive me - when I searched this site I came up with so many unrelated posts I don't have time to weed through them all.
I am 32. I never had acne as a teen. In my 20's until recently I would have an occasional breakout- nothing severe.
I stopped taking bc pills in 12/06 due to hair loss. For the last 7 months my skin has gotten increasingly worse - nothing is working.
I plan on trying proactive tonight, 1x per day as I have sensitive and dry skin as well.
Does anyone think this is a good idea? I do not want to make it worse! Acne corabined with hair loss is devastating me right now!
Thanks for any advice!

tandjsmom,

I'm sorry to hear you're having problems. I found the proactive to be VERY harsh on my skin. I couldn't use it for more than a week. And I don't have dry skin, it's super oily. But that's just me. Good luck!

Hi tandjsmom,

I too am 32 and only started with acne in the last three years. Proactive did help me for a couple of months, but after that the spots started creeping back. I have tried all sorts, including topical creams from a dermatologist, and after three years finally found the best solution for me, as follows:

omega 3 fish body oils from GNC - 2 capsules a day
women's ultra mega from GNC - 2 tablets a day
saw palmetto - 1 tablet a day

face wash - Olay Regenerist
moisturizer each morning - Neutrogena Healthy Skin AHA with SPF 15 (because I couldn't find Alpha Hydrox brand where I live)

I do take Yasmin too, but my skin started clearing up before I started taking Yasmin, when I started the above regimen. I was on Yasmin before for three months and it made no difference (I take it for BC now).

I hope you find something that works for you - for me, the worst thing about adult acne has been that each spot causes hyperpigmentation scarring - ie still looks like an angry red spot even when its healed! That never used to happen with the odd spot I got in my teens and twenties.

Good luck!

Have you tried going to an endocrinologist? You may have a hormone balance problem. That could be the reason for breaking out and hair loss. usually it is too much testosterone or an intolerance to it. I went recently due to acne and sudden weight gain without change in diet. They took 5 vials of blood and did tons of tests, for me my testosterone was high but it was due to insulin resistance which I would never had found out about if I didn't take matters into my own hand and did research on my own since my derm wasn't helping nor was my gyno.
You may want to look into this. I didn't need a referral I just picked one and went but your insurance may require one. Definately give it a try. What do you have to lose but a co-pay?

Proactive was harsh on my skin as well, and i would not recommend it. I would go to a dermatologist..and they can help you find whats best for your skin type and everything. That would be the best idea. Good Luck :)

Proactiv did nothing for me as well, i'm actually shocked that it hasn't helped most people on this forum. But if you're like me you'll give it a try anyway just to see if it does work.
