I forgot to hand in keys when I left my previous job. A few days later I was rung up to hand them in. I was away at the time and forgot all about it when I got back. Now time has passed and I have still got the keys, a usb stick, some books. I intended to hand them in but now my final pay is less then half what it should be...........

if they have done this because I havent returned the things yet then have they a right to do so?

in the eyes of the law am I a theif? (an accidental one but still a theif?)

It is illegal for employers to withhold pay for items in your possession in the United States.

That said, it is easier to turn the things back in for your docked pay than to pursue it legally.
