I've just been diagnosed with extreme GERD. I've been offered laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery to try and eliminate it, but is there anything else out there to try and help me?

I constantly have heartburn/indigestion, feel sick most of the time, have an unquenchable thirst and I tend to regurgatate a lot of food. This is getting rather erabarrassing for me and to my family. Is there anyone out there who has suffered the same?

Thank you

You don't mention what you've tried so far. Have you tried the standard medications for GERD (Zantac, Losec, etc.) and changing your diet to help minimize your symptoms?

I've tried Omeprazole (Losec) and other over the counter medication. I've also tried mints! Is there anything that can be done, other than surgery?

Don't use mints. That's one of GERD's triggers and I can't for the life of me figure out why they make "mint" OTC acid reflux meRAB?

It takes quite awhile to get your stomach back in shape. Mine was totally "trashed" as my Dr. put it and I know it was longer than any 2 to 4 weeks before I was much better. On bad days water would reflux while others I could eat more. Was told to sit up 4 hrs after eating, which was impossible because I was too sick to sit up! I suffer more with the LPR symptoms now but found sticking with mostly vegetables helped my GERD. No asparagus though/stem, and lettuce is very hard to digest. Apples were about only fruit left to eat and you choke on it sometimes. Seems I could eat rice but to this day, I have problems with meats and breaRAB. Sweet potatoes are really good for GERD. Bake and put some Sweet & Low. Plain baked potatoes are good too but you have to watch the butter, sour cream and cheese. I used yogurt to put in mine. Not bad but had problems with creamy things like yogurt and jell-o!

Hope you feel better soon as I can remeraber the misery of being so sick. Still not cured but much better!
