Please help me choose the right mountain bike and the right place to get it from!?

I need a bike for commuting but one that can also take a good beating on the trails. I started with $500 and quickly realized that wasn't going to cut it. Some bikes I've looked at are the Cannondale f5, Giant xtc 2, specialized rockhopper, and trek 6000. I need to keep the price as low as possible but i dont want to buy a POS. I've done some research about components so dont be afraid to throw some tech talk in with me. Im not opposed to older models or used bikes. I also have to factor in that my bike will be parked in public alot and i dont want a bike that screams "steal me!" any suggestions? thanks a lot :)
 
Go look on Ebay at second hand bikes, there are some very good bargains there. A new bike is more likely to get nicked.
 
my friend recently bought a giant NRS 3 (3 year old model) for $450 and had it repaired for $150 but it still has some problems with the derailers and brakes. so with ur price u could go for a second hand bike.

Or buy a good brand bike ect Trek, Norco in ur price range
