Hi. I do realise there's been loads of threads like this but could you help me please? I'm looking for an Android phone. It should have the following features: (importance 1-5, 5 is highest, 1 is lowest)

-affordable (

I just wanted to say that I had two similar qualities I wanted when I was phone hunting; the physical keyboard and not caring about power. Now I feel the opposite. That being said, the Mytouch Slide is not overpowered, has the keyboard, and is rootable. You should be able to get it for $100 if you go to Radio Shack...

Otherwise, Sprint is releasing the Galaxy S Pro probably next month, but it may be more than $100.

On Verizon the phone to get is the Incredible, or if you really don't mind you could just get the Droid. It's rootable and has a physical keyboard. I would advise against getting a phone that old (less than a year, I know) but the technology is just moving so fast right now.

Actually I think he's in the UK so he can spend about 200 us (haven't checked exchange rates lately ) and I don't think radio shack is across the pond. But I think the phone recommendations are still good.

You're going to have problems.

The cheapest Android phone I can find in my brief search, new, is the HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1) for ?145 from Amazon. The Dream was the first (and is the hence the oldest) Android phone, so likely to be the cheapest. It's stuck on Android 1.6, but is still a capable phone, and it has a reasonable keyboard. It doesn't have a lot of internal storage though, but if you root it this won't be a problem.

The only alternative with a keyboard would be the Motorola Milestone (?350 B-grade, which means it's been returned by someone and checked over, from expansys.com). But as you can see, this is getting way above ?100 already. The Milestone also comes with Android 2.1, which is much better than 1.6. Android 2.1 is the latest official release.

There's always eBay of course, if you want cheaper.

Both the HTC Dream and Motorola Milestone are rootable. The Dream has a load of ROMs for it, but most notable it can run Cyanogen MOD, which is by far the most popular custom ROM.

Powerful? Well - you pay for what you get. The Dream is not the slowest Android phone, but it is the oldest. It has a circa 528MHz processor, the Milestone has a 550MHz processor of a more powerful type. Current Android phones nearly all have 1GHz processors.

Easy to get? Both are. Amazon has the HTC Dream, expansys.com has the Motorola Milestone.

Can you really get these phones without a contract for under $100?

?100 is about $150 based on the current exchange rate. It's not a lot, especially for a phone without a contract.

I don't think HTC Espresso / MyTouch 3G slide, or the Incredible are available over here. The Droid is the HTC Milestone of course, and the Samsung Galaxy S costs ?460 contract free.

just wondering, do you have good experiences with ebay/amazon? i've had a few problems in the past with orders getting cancelled and not being able to get a refund, but those items were small, so it wasn't a huge deal. i'm very iffy on using a website to buy something big like a $200 phone...

Well, it's not always the fault of the website I suppose. It all depends on the actual seller, the website is just a middle-man in the transaction. A mixed-up order happened to me once, I ordered an NVidia 8400GS but got Elvis Presley vinyl instead ;-P. If anything bad happens, it's just your luck.

BTW, any more suggestions?
