Hello. I'm a 16 year old boy. I'm currently obese (weighing 250 lbs, 6 ft tall).

I got a physical recently and the bloodwork results came back. After 12 hours of fasting, they found that my glucose levels were in the normal range, but my serum insulin was at 23 and they said the normal is less then 14. They also said my TSH (thyroid) level and my chloresterol was abnormal.

So what exactly does this all mean? The letter didn't have anything in detail explaining what this all means.

Only your doctor can explain to you what your blood work really means (if you don't want to go in for another appt, just ask to speak to the nurse) but I'd guess you might have hypothyroidism. (A high TSH means you have low, or hypo-thyroid, a low TSH means too much thyroid hormone, or hyper-thyroid)

Problems with the thyroid gland can effect insulin levels, it can also raise cholesterol and make losing weight more difficult (it slows your metabolism). HypoT has lots of symptoms, like feeling cold, feeling achy and tired all the time, dry skin and hair, but young people may not have any noticeable symptoms.

It's easily treated with a daily medication.

Here's an info page on hypothyroidism: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000353.htm

But see your doc, don't take the word of some weirdo on the internet!:p;):D
