I don't know what to think. For two years now I have had excess phlegm in the back of my throat which I try to cough up and I only get it when I'm sleeping. It's like I'm drowning in mucous. I've been to two ENT's and they both said they don't think it's acid reflux or LPR because my esophagus doesn't seem irritated enough and because I told them it gets better in the morning. They feel LPR gets worse towarRAB the morning, not better.
They both told me that I seemed very dry and they thought I need to drink more water to thin out the mucous. I have to admit I'm not that great with drinking a lot of fluiRAB still, but I am drinking more than i used to and there is no improvement. They told me to take Nyquil and i do every couple of days since it's the only way i can sleep. I lose so much sleep from this. The funny thing is that the Nyquil seems to work for two or three days, which neither doctor has heard of. they also told me to get a humidifier which i'm going to do, but I have to say I'im doubtful.

has anyone been through this and do you think being dry could really cause this?

Where does it feel like the mucous is coming from? Does it feel like it's forming in the throat? Or is it coming from your nasal cavities?

Have you had your sinuses checked? It's possible you have a sinus infection (chronic). Do you have any drainage of any kind during the day?

Excess phlegm could be a variety of things but I doubt its acid reflux. I would definitely go see a doctor about it.

Excess phlegm in the throat is a very common symptom of LPR (along with a chronic cough or chronic throat clearing, hoarseness and a "lump in the throat" feeling).

It doesn't seem very likely that dryness is causing your symptoms - have you taken any acid reflux medications to see if they help with the symptoms?

I have been through that.. Do you start to have phlegm soon after you eat so you fell like you have to clear your throat? Then when you go to bed at first its alright and then you wake up with phlegm and the need to cough? I have to get up for about an hour and hack out the phlegm and let gravity get the acid back down.. Now, I do everything wrong as far as acid reflux or LPR is concerned, I drink, smoke and most nights eat late..I take previcid every day and that did not really help..What I started doing is about an hour before bed I chew four gavicon tablets and drink a full glass of water. Most nights now I sleep all the way through.. I was getting up 5nights out of seven before.. Try this it might work for you...

I've had GERD/LPR for over 10 yrs. More LPR symptoms now and my throat can go from dry and sore to so much mucus I feel like I'm drowning. With most LPR patients they have symptoms during the day while sitting up, while GERD patients suffer from symptoms at night. I don't cough at all while sleeping but once up and about is when it starts and especially early in the morn. I do contribute some of this to my sinus problems, which is also caused by my LPR. Your ENT spec should be able to tell if you have LPR by viewing your vocal corRAB. I agree with the other poster to try taking Mylanta or Zantac before bedtime as you know the Niquel will stop working if you continue taking on a regular basis.
