PLEASE HELP! - Engine Stall - '98 GIXXER-750

Does anyone have any idea why the engine would stall on a '98 Suzuki GSXR-750 after it was running for at least 25 or 30 minutes before stalling?

The engine temp was approx. 95 degrees and I think I sensed a tiny bit of sluggishness a few minutes before she stalled. It happened while the engine was at idle speed, waiting at a light in first gear.

The same thing happened a couple of months back and I was able to kick-start it to get her running and since then she's been fine.

There is fuel in the tank.

The fuel pump seems to be working fine, at least you can hear it when all the switches are in the correct position for starting.

The battery has plenty of juice...for now.

Desparate.

PLEASE HELP!

Thanks very much for taking the time.

This seems to be a pretty common thread around here!

Could be a lot of things:
Fuel pump or filter
Plugged gas cap vent
Electrical failure when hot
Stuck float in carb (if not FI)

I'd suggest doing a message search on here for "stall". A lot of stuff will probably come up. Regardless of the specific model of bike, the basics are all the same.

The bottom line is: Intermittant failures are a BITCH. It will probably have to go to the shop and even then a fix is iffy.........unless and until it fails completely.

Sorry.

Thanks very much for the reply EASYRIDER!

Follow up:
All four plugs have been changed.
Air filter cleaned (will be replaced as soon as dealer gets one).
I checked all the fuel lines and pulled the main supply line off and turned her on to check the pump. Fuel flowed freely. I spoke to the guys at the dealership here in town and was told that there is NO fuel filter. I found this really odd but could not find anything about a fuel filter in the owner's manual. I have a CLYMER manual as well but don't recall anything about a fuel filter in there either! So unless it's part of the pump assembly, which I believe is inside the tank at the bottom, I don't know what else to do to check the fuel supply.
I'll check the gas cap vent (interesting! good idea!)
If it's an electrical problem, it may be with the ignition / sparking mechanism, 'cause when the bike died, it was just the engine that shut off. The rest of the bike (electricals that is) seemed unaffected.

A friend of mine suggested to confirm that all the electrical connections are still good, specifically with all the connectors below the air box for the ignition / spark system.

That's my next step.

It's FI so no carb issues.

The manual suggests to take it to the dealer if, upon attempting to start it, the red light is constantly on (lit) and FI is shown in the digital display, which is what finally occurred after spark plug repacement.

I quickly did a search for "stall". It seems that I'm taking most of the right steps in diagnosing / repairing the problem before having to give in and rely on the dealership. I'm relatively new to the world of blogs / forum / etc. so suggesting that I do a search was also sound advice!

Will keep you up to speed.

Many thanks again for your help thus far!

OK, finally figured it out. It was the blasted side stand switch. Once unplugged, I shorted it and tried starting her up. She fired up no problem.

Gonna call the dealer and pick up a new one.

Ride-On!
