please help 2001 dodge stratus air cond. changes air flow direction on its own?
switches air flow direction on its own.but it stays cold air on the controls i have it set to cool feet and it will but then change to defrost and so on. and then some days it works fine. but 85 % time it doesnt work correctly

it is most likely an vacuum problem if not you should be able to free it up buy moving it back and forth alot but if it changes when you are pushing on gas for lon time or not pushing on gas then vacuum trouble you can get starting fluid and spray around and if engine revs look in that area for broken hose ETC

It sounds to me like you have a vacuum leak, try to look under the dashboard and see if you can see any of the lines or the actual mechanism itself, if its not a vacuum leak the mechanism may have a small break or may be loose allowing the "flapper" that changes air flow to be pushed around by the flow of air causing it to choose direction at will!! Good luck!

Check for vacuum leaks, doors in heater box (plenum) are controlled by flow of vacuum,- If you have a leak in line into inside of vehicle, - or in edge of accumulator, - it will allow vacuum capsules to release and change flow patterns. This is much more likely than heater control vacuum director module being bad, though once in a great while one does get broken or worn out!

Also if leaking, it will be more l likely to drop control while accelerating going up hill,- and more likely to operate right when going downhill under compression, ---- or when engine idling, as at these speeds and conditions vacuum generated by engine is greater!
