Please help! 2001 Chrysler Sebring Engine problems.?

I'm thinking of buying a nice used convertible 2001 Chrysler Sebring, but there's a problem. It's engine has a knock in it and I'm worried that it probably needs replaced. The knock is steady and sounds like it's near the top. I can even feel it with my hand. I know almost nothing about vehichle mechanics and the people I've called have given mixed assesments. One guy says that it could go away after fifteen minutes of driving, and another says that in that same ammount of time, it could blow and be completely ruined. The owner asks a really good price for this car even if it had no engine and I really want it!

My questions are: What are possible causes of engine knocking? What is the best kind of professional to contact to diagnose and fix it? If it needs replaced, about how much would another used engine cost and what would the replacement cost be? And how much money would it be wise to spend on this particular car with no engine?
