Please give me Advice on buying a 1098s

Had an 07 1098. It stalled so many times I stopped counting. It was in service more than what I could ride it, and they could never keep it running. Eventually gave up and sold it. Other than that...no problems with anything else.

Forgot,.. there was one minor issue....holding on, when I trun the throttle all the way open..

Seriously...nice bike, if the stalling wasnt an issue. I wouldnt recommend that tricolor with the stalling problems. Mine was the same, and they never figured it out. It has now been resold 8 times already.

My red '08 base bought new in my av had no probs at all in 6000 miles.

Then I bought a new '08 black s... a whole different story. 117 miles, and it coasted to a stop with the voltage reg... got that fixed, and no more issues. Then I oiled down my rear because the dealer installed 600 mi service ducati oil filter leaked like a faucet... replaced that with a k&n, no more issues there. One day on a very, very humid day I was stranded after work cause it wouldn't start. Eventually worked itself out though. The leds in the right mirror burnt out too. And a week ago, the bike shut down completely with an error code CAN 38.0 which is being looked at next week. Warranty should cover that.

Was a bit of a frustrating year, considering the previous had been drama free. All that said, it's worth every penny! The looks, sound, handling, overall feel, and attention make it the best bike for me that I've ever found to ride on.

thanks for all that info!
hm, i don't know if i could deal with all that bs. that sort of stuff just shouldn't happen in my opinion with any bike. dealer's will never tell you this kind of stuff.

Did you try to use to lemon law on that one? i've never heard of it being this bad. this is my whole problem with buying a used bike. i need it to be an "s" and need the "red" frame...so unless i want to wait for the 2010's i have to buy used and thus will have no warranty against this sort of thing.

sorry to hear that, i bet you expected the S to be just as good if not better. did you sell the 1098? what was the reason for the "S" ...other than it having better suspension etc.
I Agree it's still worth it but i really don't want to be stuck on my ninja with the 1098 in the shop draining all my $ . I guess we all need to roll the dice sometimes

Pull, the trigger, buying an italian bike is worth it. The suspension and frame geometry are so much better and stable then a japanese bike. You will instantly be a faster rider because of the added confidence of the chasis...it is so worth it.
As far as the S goes, you can added lighter wheels (Carrozzeria $1800 bucks and lighter than Marchesini), carbon fender & Ohlins internals for a lot less than buying the S option and still have money left over for other mods and then it is your personal. With the added knowledge of the Ohlins from Dan Kyle are custom valved for you and not some off the shelf valving.

Unfortuanatly theres no lemon law where I stay, so I had to take the knock on that one. Mine was the worst of the bunch here. There was a couple with the same problem, but it wasnt that severe for them.

Hi, had my '08 1098S 3 months. It runs beautifully and it's the sort of bike you just can't ride enough.

Issues; Headlight shell replaced-paint defect.
Tank replaced, dent like moulding defect on top.
Fuel leak from gasket on underside of tank, stained crankcase.
Intake airducts don't seal allowing dust/grit into intake.
Rear shock needs rebuild, harsh as hell for solo use.

All tolled, no regrets, but don't expect Japanese like attention to detail. I could write another list of defects from my mates 749 and hyper.

To Ducati's credit they do acknowledge any problem and rectify it without quibbling.

all good points! i may get a base and just put the mods on i want/need. i really like the 2010 1198 i may wait on one of those.

that's unreal...if that was me i'd bomb DNA with calls until i got my way.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Did you notice all these issues or did you get a recall letter for the less obvious recalls?
Just when i'm ready to pull the trigger on one..i start really thinking about it & end up back where i started. I'm not patient with these types of things so i'll be sure to inspect it closely. Thanks for the tips/ advice sir

Tommi,

I bought an '07 1098s in March, '07. It now has 4,000 miles on it. I've had zero problems. Recalls were done, (smoothly, without hassle), but there was no problem with my rectifier or chain wheel prior to the recall.

A word of advice: Most, (though not all), the bikes with stalling issues were attributable to stock or slip-on exhaust systems. The OEM exhaust coupled to the OEM ECU is designed to get the bike through inspection. This is accomplished by running the bike extremely lean; hence the stalling issues. This problem is worsened by running the bike in stop-and-go traffic, or other urban/suburban environments, which is obviously using the bike for something it wasn't designed to do.

Installing a Full Termignoni exhaust system, (which runs a larger diameter exhaust manifold, eliminates the cat, and includes a richer fuel map and free-flowing air cleaner), generally solves all stalling issues. The few bikes that continued to stall even after installation of the Full Termi system were mostly due to cam timing issues. (A few bikes had camshafts that were improperly degreed.)

The stalling issue should not be blown out of proportion. Don't forget that the vast majority of 1098s had no stalling issues, but given human nature, we heard a whole lot more about the few that did stall than the thousands that didn't.

If you're looking for a used 1098, look for one with the Full Termi system already installed. This is fairly common, so it won't be hard to find. Don't be talked into a bike with slip-ons; the 1098 needs the Full Termi system in order to realize its potential. Stalling issues aside, the 1098 just doesn't run right with the OEM exhaust. The difference is night and day.
