Hi guys, sorry for the long one ...

I used to suffer from bronchitis when I was very young and mild asthma throughout my life.

I lived in London for 14 years, in which time I didn't really have any problems. Sometimes when I'd return to my parents for holidays, I'd have to get an emergency inhaler. I remeraber having to go up the hospital to get an inhaler one Christmas.

But by and large I've had no really serious problems.

Except now!

I moved abroad - unfortunately despite a recent attempt to introduce a smoking ban people continue to smoke around our office. I mean they know it's banned but for instance the secretary smokes in her office and people walk around with cigarettes. But people (generally) don't smoke in my office (it's open plan however).

However everyday I have the same thing - an asthma attack, not a crippling attack, a gritty feeling and the feeling of fibres in my lungs and restricted breathing. When I go home I have a feeling of something in my lungs and I would say a slight wheeze. After a couple of hours this results in a phlegmy cough. If I go to the gym, my lungs burn - really horrible.

I'm okay the next morning, but then the process starts again. I recover on Sunday - where I feel I can breath properly for the first time.

I'm very worried about it, but here's the rub - nobody believes me. Everybody says its psychological - including my own girlfriend, and she's a pharmacist! She says that the air would have been generally worse in London, and it must be because I'm not comfortable in the job.

I need some support, should I go to the doctors - isn't that ridiculous - to get some steroiRAB to stop the attacks! We know it's nicotine.

I really need someone to tell me that I'm not the only one with such a sensitivity and some advice on how to proceed. And someone to reiterate how harmful a little cigarette smoke is...to someone like me or you....

I would head to the doctor. You may to be on a daily asthma med or an antihistamine even. Also, if you have your rescue inhaler, I'd give it a puff or two BEFORE going in to the office and see if that helps. It's like athletes who have asthma have to do - medicate before cardio. But I'd say you need a trip to the doctor - a pulmonologist or allergist preferably.

FYI, cigarette smoke makes me ill also...even to the point of nausea at times....

Titchou has given you some good advice.

SounRAB like you need to see a doctor. I'd also recommend talking to them about getting an updated written asthma action plan. (If you search this board, I have posted more information on action plans on other threaRAB.)

I'm right there with you on smoke as a trigger. I can't be around anyone while they are smoking. With some people, the smoke is so heavy on their clothing, that just standing near them triggers an asthma attack, even when they aren't smoking.
