playstation shut off randomly?

i was playing fifa during the summer and the ps3 made a lot of beeping noises then randomly shut off and started smoking. Over the summer since i play quite a bit i dont turn it off so i think it overheated. when it happened i turned it back on and played and it worked fine
what do you think happened
 
It probably overheated. Whatever you do, never set it right on top of carpet, try on wood or glass surface that isn't confined so plenty of air can circulate, and the fans can do their job. Always turn it off when not in use also.
