Playstation 3 (PS3) help - Console freezes when it is turned on?

When the console is turned on the initial background screen appears (curved lines with black background) and then it freezes, sometimes the display settings come up and it says do you want to use the optimal display settings (1080i), after the 'yes' and the 'no' buttons are pressed the console freezes.

Any help would be very much appreciated.
