playing media types avi mpeg mp4 mpg?

I cant play media files that i have some that were copyed for me work and some dont I have tried heaps of media players vlg al show windows clasic flash movie player video converters
also downloaded codec .
i run on windows xp and its in good condition ccleaner and reg fix

why wont they play
