Play downloaded games on PSP 3000?

I've never had a psp before and I'm thinking of getting one. I want to be able to play downloaded games on it though, is it possible? I've heard that you have to mod or hack it? What do I have to do?

I need some info on this, your answers would be really appreciated! :]
