Hi all. My brother has recently moved to a property in East Anglia. He has a good size garden space which is mostly decking and paving slabs - no greenery to be found at this stage. The garden gets lots sun and is quite near a main road (if this is of relevance) - its surrounded by wooden walls. He'd love to get plants in there but we know very little about what species would work. He's bought troughs and will get lots of pots - any thoughts?Something that would climb up the sides would be great aswell as plants for containers. Many thanks.

There are a lot of choices for very sunny (full sun) areas. Clematis or Morning Glories grow as a vine up a wall. Clematis bloom in the Spring to early summer. Morning Glories will bloom from summer to early fall. These can be planted in a large pot.

As for other types of container plants, you can plant Daylilies. There are many color blooms available with daylilies. Some variation that will re-bloom all summer if you remove the dead blooms. You could try Echinacea for summer blooms. For spring blooms, you could plant tulips and daffodils.

With containers, the most important thing to remember is to water several times a week. Containers dry out faster than planting in the ground. Adding a layer of mulch in your container will help to keep water in the soil.

Enjoy!
