Assume this:
If a real big bad meteor (or planet x) was approaching earth
and this:
and the government would not warn to not create an early panic

then (here comes the question:)
Would such an object be detectable by hobby astronomers without access to big university or government telescopes? How close can something get to earth before hobby astronomers notice it?

I am not interested in any planet x or meteorite hitting the earth theory. I just care about the ability of hobby astronomers world wide.

Yes, they would find it, if it existed. A body, on a direct course with Earth, that is as big as a planet or life-ending meteor would be detectable well before it was a threat. But how would you keep every astronomer in the world quiet? That's the real question, lol.

Amateur astronomers find comets, supernovas, and asteroids all the time. An object that was approaching Earth would probably have been seen by "hobby" astronomers before the government knew about it.

And one other thing to consider:
The "government" of one country (such as the US) has no control over the information shared by people around the world on the Internet.
So the US government could try to keep something quiet, but they wouldn't succeed.
