Pinterest may be a visual social platform, but words still have a place on most users’ boards. In continuation of its busy week Pinterest, on Friday announced a new deal with Getty Images that will provide more detailed information on the photos pinned by the users on the site.

The deal comes just one day after reports emerged about Pinterest raising an additional $225 million in funding, elevating the company’s valuation as high as $4 billion.
Pinterest is a pinboard style of a photo-sharing website enabling users to create and manage theme based image collections such as events, interests, and hobbies. Users can browse other pinboards for images, “re-pin” images to their own pinboards, or “like” photos.
Whenever a user pins a Getty image that already exist on the web, the metadata that Getty has on file for that image including the description, photographer and date taken will appear alongside that photo on the pin board of the user. Pinterest will pay Getty for all of the data they include alongside photos. . Getty Images didn’t disclose the financial terms of the deal.
“One thing we’ve found is that the more we know about a pin, the more valuable we can make it for you,” wrote Michael Yamartino, a product manager at Pinterest, on the company’s blog, Friday. “That’s why we’ve been working with partners to get more data into Pinterest to help us make recommendations, make pins more useful, and even offer notifications when prices drop.”
The metadata will be appended to Pinterest collection in the coming months. Pinterest’s recent moves have all focused on creating more written content. In September, Pinterest rolled out promoted pins to allow advertisers the opportunity to get more detailed content in front of possible customers alongside images.
Getty Images reverberated Pinterest’s words in its own blog on Friday. “We’ll get a photo credit for our images on Pinterest’s site and a link back. Pinterest users get more context and have more fun,” the company said.
