Pink Panther

Probably been discussed already but since "the funniest scene thread" mentioned sellers as clouseau I wondered.

What did people think of the Pink panther movie with Steve martin.
Did he do a reasonable job of the part, or was it a dismal failure.
Can anyone replace Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau ?

I am a martin fan and did enjoy it, it was just different.
The black moustache did jar a little with the rest of the hair coloring.
Maybe that was a deliberate decision not to dye his almost trademark white hair, or to make the moustache appear fake.

I would go see any more attempts he makes in the part.
Good casting of Kevin Kline as Dreyfus, a worthy replacement for Herbert Lom.

It isnt a scene by scene remake and the character as played by Martin is different but as eccentric as the original.

I like the new version but then I liked Bilko which many didn't that's why I wonder, am I just too much of a Steve Martin fan to be objective.

I'm not too worried if that's true as long as I am entertained by a movie I am happy.

I'm sorry but the new version is not a patch on the Peter Sellers version. The original Pink Panther has me in tears with laughter but the remake I did not even raise a smile. Don't get me wrong I love Steve Martin in films like 'Planes Trains and automobiles', 'Bowfinger' 'The man with 2 brains' but a remake of 'The Pink Panther' was a bad move. Hollywood have an obbssesion with remaking classic movies and I wish they would stop it. However 'Dawn of the Dead' was a cool remake :)

Parts of the new version were funny, especially the "I wouuuld liiike to buy an 'amburger" scene.

I wanted a chinese Cato though :(

It was on TV not long ago so I gave it a try.

Could only stand a few minutes. It was abysmal.

Steve Martin was totally miscast. I loved some of his early films, particularly The Man With Two Brains and All Of Me, even Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid ("I hadn't had my willie adjusted like that in a long time") and was hoping he'd found something original to do with the Clouseau character. Unfortunately he hadn't.
