Yo Pig,
Occured to me when you mentioned Kore-eda Hirokazu that you might also
enjoy Iwai Shunji. He's one of my faves and while I'd say he's not
quite the maestro that Kore-eda is, he's quite interesting and has a
varied ouevre.
Fireworks: See it from the bottom or the side (short)
Swallowtail Butterfly
Love Letter
Picnic (short)
All About Lily Chou-Chou
Undo
Fried Dragon Fish
Hana and Alice
April Story
Swallowtail Butterfly is sort of his "masterpiece" in that it's the
most grandiose, Lily Chou-chou may be that as well. However, the
smaller more intimate movies (and shorts) are my faves. Of them all,
i LOVE Fireworks, Picnic, Undo (feels like it could have been the
inspiration for a Cronenberg movie), and Love Letter (this is probably
a bit sappy, sentimental, and contrived for, say, william!). Hana and
Alice is very sweet and sort of weird; in that i really enjoyed it.
I'm not sure what's available in the US, but I'm sure a few must be.
Give him a try and lmk what you think.
