Ping: boli - refirgerator nose

My refrigerator is making noises that sound like a small electric room
heater just before it kicks on. It's not a buzz, but that's the only
way to describe it and it lasts from 3-5 seconds. Sometimes I hear
the fan kick in... which probably means it's cooling off. Should I
call a technician? We have somebody, but to tell you the truth I
would be upset if I had to replace it. I have not had a problem with
the interior, but I don't form emotional attachments with large
appliances.

Thanks

You have to vacuum/dust off the condenser fins once in a while.

The "nose" reminded me of Television City, a Hollywood California TV
production complex where I worked. There was Walter Lantz (Woody
Woodpecker) offices. The office door had a 3D face of Woody on it in the
hallway . We never knocked on the door but loved to walk past it. We
held Lantz in high regard!

Then there was "Miracle Films" a few floors, this way or that, I forget,
with a florescent sign on their office doors: "If it's a Great Film,
it's a Miracle!"

The myriad of gently sloping steel ramps from floors to floors in the
inner courtyard, for the companies to hand truck film reels was a
favorite hang out at lunch.

Oh... you were talking about refrigerators.

Forgive me.

How about Oreos and milk?!! :D

Believe it or not, they were vacuumed just a month ago.
My guess is that guess something is going to fail, but I don't know
what.

How old is it. Has it been freezing anything in the refrigerator
compartment? If it's older or has been
freezing food it shouldn't, you are about to have a problem. That
little noise is usually a give away.

1. Wait for it to fail and then you'll know.
2. Call a repair man to take a look.
3. Keep asking on newsgroups because everyone is a repairman.

Could be your auto-defrost.
Call the manufacturer customer service.

Yeah, I've had a freezing problem in the bottom of one of my vegetable
bins for quite a while, but eliminated it by storing things like bulk
spices in the bottom of the bin.

Just small ones? :-)

The evaporator coils inside the freezer go through a defrost cycle
several times a day. A heater is turned on and a fan blows warm air on
the coils to melt any any frost on them. Typically, you'd want it to do
this in the middle of the night but if you have the power disconnected
it could come on when you're likely to be using it. If it is the
refrigerator defrost cycle, don't worry about it. You could turn off the
power for a short while to delay when this happens.

Yeah, right. Wonderful idea. Pay by the hour to wait for the funny
noise.

Did I ping you, Asshole? Don't stick your nose where it doesn't
belong. Boli *is* a technician. Crawl back under your bridge.

Yes! It sounds exactly like an electric space heater when it turns on
and the fan sometimes kicks in later. The defrost cycle isn't
something that should be happening all day long?

I think it was about 5 times a day and it lasts for 10 minutes or so or
was that 10 times a day and 5 minutes? Anyway, it happens several times
a day and lasts for several minutes.

What you probably hear is that the refrigerator gets quiet because the
compressor turns off and then you'd hear some humming and maybe the
ticking of the coils heating up and expanding, after a short while the
fan turns on. If you have a fan that runs constantly there may be a
problem.

The good news is that your heater is still working. Most of the time the
heater is bad and doesn't heat up and your coils get covered with ice
and your refrigerator and freezer runs warm.

Yeah, we've already crossed that bridge... the refrigerator was too
warm and there was ice in the bottom of the freezer compartment.
