pimples vs cold sores

I get burabs around my lips frequently (about 5-6 times a year) that tingle and are painful. I orginially thought they were cold sores, but they develop very close to my lips (touching the edge) but not on them. And although they last about a week or a week and a half, they progress like a normal pimple would. The only thing that is different is the pain. Is it a cold sore or a pimple?
