Picking my first Android phone

Hello,

I'm looking at upgrading to an Android phone sometime soon, from a J2ME touchscreen phone, still on contract.
I'll buy the phone off contract, and unlock it if necessary.

Maybe not to begin with, but I'm a self-confessed geek and I'd like to mess around with custom ROMs at some point. I've eliminated the Atrix from the start because of this.

My contenders so far:
HTC Incredible S - Bell and VMC (Any difference between the two?) - 500$
HTC Desire HD - Telus - 500$
Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant - Bell - 500$
Samsung Nexus S - Telus - 500$
Acer Liquid E - Rogers - 425$

Other things I wonder about:
-Custom interfaces like Sense and TouchWiz...
-Manufacturer support for updates and such. Who has a good history?

Any others I should consider? Any I should steer away from?

Thanks in advance,

Louis

Update, I've done some more homework:

The Incredible S is out. Locked bootloader is a dealbreaker.
And it seems I could get the Nexus S at a certain yellow-logoed large electronics chain store for a hint under 425$ by using some left-over store credit.

You should wait a couple of months, there will be a couple new choices for you around mid summer.

Mid summer: iPhone 5 & Droid Bionic are two of my favorite phones coming out this summer.

If you are in desperate need of a phone ASAP then I would go with the Samsung Nexus S or the HTC Incredible.

Aaaannd the winner is: Nexus S!

AccessoryGeekss: I'm not especially interested in the iPhone platform. And since I'm in Canada, the Bionic, if I could get it activated, would be stuck on EV-DO 1X...

Thanks for all the replies,

Louis
