I don't know much to say so I'll just cut straight to it.

I want...
to use a smartphone capable of tethering
1GB of tethered data (per month, ditto below)
50 minutes of talk time, billed by the second
~10 text messages
call display
basic, basic voicemail

This is Toronto. Help me find the least costly plan that will give me all of above. I'll give preference to anything that is NOT Rogers.
 
I just have to try again.

HTC Hero from Telus
MotoSurf A3100
Palm Treo Pro

I want...
tri-band HSPA 850/1900/2100
quad-band GSM
wifi
bluetooth
an SD slot
Preferably android or any of the Linux flavors, would consider WM
GPS preferred

There are reports of Hero being crippled and not able to tether. Treo Pro won't get WM6.5. There are reports of problems with name display feature and unresponsive touchscreen on Surf, and earlier reads points to Surf not having wifi, then the actual user manual says it does.

Treo Pro now down to C$320 and Surf can be imported for less than C$400 to my door from what I read.

Or are there better options out there?
