Physics question: Why is voltage evenly distributed in a series circuit?

More precisely, I don't understand the concept that in a series circuit with three identical lightbulbs, all three will be the same brightness as eachother.
I understand that voltage is split, because of conservation of energy...and and that each time the current flows through a resistor it uses up some potential energy to light the bulb.
But then, wouldn't that mean that as the current flowed though each resistor, there would be less and less potential energy so the lightbulbs would be dimmer and dimmer? why are they the same as eachother?
