"A father racing his son has one-third the kinetic energy of the son, who has half the mass of the father. The father speeds up by 1.0 m/s and then has the same kinetic energy as the son.
a.) What is the original speed of the father?
b.) What is the original speed of the son?"
I have no idea how to even BEGIN working this problem. I imagine the kinetic energy function, K=0.5mv^2, has to be used somehow, but I've been looking at this forever and don't know what to do. Can someone please, please help???
