A concrete highway is built of slabs 20m long (at 20 C). How wide should the expansion cracks be (at 20 C) between the slabs to prevent buckling if the annual extreme temperatures are -35 C and 48 C?(the coefficient of linear expanssion of concrete is 12x10-6/C)

20m * (48 - 20)° * 12E-6 = .00672 m = 6.72 mm

Temperatures colder than 20°C will enlarge the crack and not create a buckling problem.
