on my physics assingment is perhaps the most frustrating of all problems. well maybe that's a bit dramatic, but i can't for the life of me figure it out. any help would be appreciated!

"A police officer is cruising at 24 mph when a speeding car passes him traveling at 45 mph. If the cop accelerates at the same moment the speeding car is next to him, how long will it take the cop to catch the speeding car? how fast will he be moving? how far did he travel while in pursuit?"

thanks
Sadly, i've said the same as you (that we need the acceleration rate), but my teacher insists that the problem is solvable without it. so. im not sure what i should do!
