If static electricity is caused by an imbalance of electrons in two objects, do the cat's electrons transfer to your hand, when you pet your cat? Any other thoughts on how our bodies are slowly transformed by the loss/gain of electrons?

Perspiring minds want to know.

yes, or it could be the other way around

but there will only be a tiny tiny tiny net movement

As neither your body nor the cat as excellent conductors of electricity, it is probable that only regions very close to the point of contact would facilitate net movement of charge.

Also, forget the idea that our bodies are transformed by imbalance of electrons, just because you are touching something doesn't mean all the electrons in your body are somehow going to be sucked out.
