op-amps coneccted in the inverted mode give a gain of something, depending on the Rf and R1. what actually does the "gain" actually mean and how do i work it out

gain is how much a signal (for example) is magnified at the output compared to the input.

It can be calculated by adding the two resistances together, and dividing by the value of the resistor connected to ground, you should get an answer greater than 1!.

Op amps can be connected as either an inverting or non-inverting amplifier.
The gain is the output/input amplification factor.
The inverting gain is -R2/R1 where R2 is the feed back resistor and R1 is the input resistor
so if R1 = 100 ohms and R2 = 1k ohms gain = - 10 . the negative sign means that if input is 0.5v output will be -5v.
note that the gain cannot exceed the supply voltage.
For a non inv amp the gain is 1 + R2/R1
