PHP and MySql record selection.?

Does anyone know how to select data from a database without knowing it. By this I mean I am creating a user forgot password link so they provide their user name and I find and select their user name but I need to alter the password how do I do it as no form will submit the password. So I need PHP to select the password based an a users user name.
