PHP and CSS for Joomla?

Do you HAVE to know PHP and CSS for Joomla? Which language should I focus on learning for Joomla?

I would like to be able to theme my own sites and not rely on templates. I'm guessing CSS.
 
Focus on CSS as Joomla is very similar.... but it is a good idea to know the basics of PHP I have found out.

A good book that is available is the Visual Quickstart Guide for Joomla!. Pretty straightforward and covers a lot of areas.

2.xHTML
3.CSS
4.JavaScript
5.PHP
